If you have been reading my Blog for a while, you will know that evangelism is not one of my strong spiritual gifts. I have resigned to the fact that I will never be a Billy Graham or my personal favorite, Greg Laurie. Does it mean though that I should sit back and wait till an un-believer graces the seat next to me in the pew? Hardly! What is my personal style of witnessing? I am glad you asked…

I am the quiet type. I don’t hand out tracks; I don’t stand at the next street-corner to invite people to attend a crusade; and I don’t come right out telling people they need to be saved, because otherwise they end up in hell. No, I am quiet. I witness through my actions. I am ready to listen when people approach me with their health problem (this happens a lot) — I tell them I will pray for them. I cry with people when they have lost a father, mother, brother, sister or child. I go and get a cup of water if someone is thirsty (and sometimes I just grab a cup of coffee). I smile at people, when I see a frown on their face. I offer shelter to people who need to find a place to live. I give someone a ride who just had surgery. I work without complaining (much)…Yes, I hang out with un-believers at work and Bloggers that don’t share my faith…

But sometimes He gives me the strength to speak up. Let me share a couple of examples from work. One of my coworkers noticed the cross necklace I am wearing. He asked me if I am a Christian. I said: “Yes, I am. The necklace is not a fashion statement” — “So, you believe what is written in the Bible about God and Jesus?” — “Yes, I do!!!” (I didn’t get any farther – yet – I will wait for His green light)…On Halloween we had a pot-luck in my department. I was a little surprised that Halloween was considered by most of my coworkers a holiday –…I shared with several of them that in Germany, October 31st is celebrated as Reformation Day. I got some blank stares, but that gave me an opportunity to explain.

As Advent is approaching I plan to have a little “Jesse Tree” set-up in my cubicle. I pray that God may use it for me to share the Good News. I have paperback Bibles in the back of my car — just in case I encounter someone who wants to know more my God…

One of my favorite books about evangelism is Rebecca Manley Pippert’s book “Out of the Saltshaker & Into the World (yeah – thats why it is in the prize package). Let me quote from the beginning of the book:
“Christians and non-Christians have something in common: we’re both uptight about evangelism. Our fear as Christians seems to be How many people did I offend this week? We think that we must be a little obnoxious in order to be good evangelists. A tension builds inside: Should I be sensitive to people and forget about evangelism, or should I blast them with the Gospel and forget about their dignity as human beings? Many Christians choose to be aware of the person but then feel defensive and guilty for not evangelizing….”

You see, I agree. We need to see non-Christians first as a human being. Just like Jesus did. How come, once we are saved from eternal damnation, we forget that we are sinners too? Yes, we have been forgiven, but we are still sinners. We need His forgiveness every time we mess up. Okay, so maybe some don’t mess up as much as I do…But still. Really, think about it. How can we condemn someone who has not yet a saving relationship with Jesus Christ?!? We can not make someone believe what we believe. We can only sow the seeds, but ultimately it is up to God to ‘make them believe’ – by the power of His Spirit. We are only His hands and feet that share the message…

So, yes, I probably will never preach at a crusade, but by His power I will continue to let my little light shine…

“The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost. But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life. To the King of ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.” ~ 1 Timothy 1:15-17 (ESV)

Shout His Fame!

Writing Contest

“But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law who belonged to their sect complained to his disciples, ‘Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and ‘sinners’?’ Jesus answered them, ‘It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.'”~ Luke 5:30-32 (NIV)

How do you witness? How do you go about it? Do you witness at all? Do you invite them to your home/blog?

You see, He has rekindled my passion for the ‘lost’. A passion to witness that He is the only way that leads to heaven. I lived a sheltered life working in a Christian environment. I forgot how much people are hurting. How unsatisfied they really are. It doesn’t matter that they have the newest car in their drive-way, or the biggest house on the block…They are still missing something in their life. I know what they are missing. How do I share that? I am an introvert, so it is harder for me to speak up. But I also have His command and His Spirit that I need to share the Good news with others…

So, back to my question. How do you witness? Are you bold? Are you gentle? In order to see different witnessing ‘styles’ I thought a little contest would be fun…I would like you to write a little ‘essay’ about your own personal witness.

I even have a little price for you — 2 Worship CD’s (Hope by Hillsong Church & Alive Forever by Travis Cottrell) and 2 books (Out of the Saltshaker by Rebecca Manley Pippert and Voices of the Faithful by Beth Moore). If you wondering how I came up with the title “Shout His Fame” — I have been listening to the song called ‘Shout Your Fame’ by Hillsong Church over the last week. The words hit home for me…

I asked my blogging-buddy Sissy from Laced with Grace to assist me in selecting the most inspiring essay. The contest dead-line is November 20th. I will also add Mr. Linky this up-coming week so it it will be easier for you to submit your entry. It would be really cool if you also could post a little blurb on your blog about this little contest — let me know if you would like the button.

Sissy and I are looking forward reading your entry…

Update: Yes, Carol, I will also write an essay about my witnessing style…I will publish mine on November 21st .

Prepare Your Heart

And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.
~ Luke 2:6-7 (ESV)

Advent ~ a season of anticipation ~ a season of longing for peace on earth…I know it is true for me. I have wonderful memories of advent growing up, and that is one area in my life I try to continue in my own household…

As we are getting ready for the ‘busy’ season this year, let us also prepare our hearts for the true reason for the season: “(Advent) It is that hope, however faint at times, and that God, however distant He sometimes seems, which brings to the world the anticipation of a King who will rule with truth and justice and righteousness over His people and in His creation. It is that hope that once anticipated, and now anticipates anew, the reign of an Anointed One, a Messiah, who will bring peace and justice and righteousness to the world.” (quoted from The Voice).

This year I am planning on expanding sharing the reason for Christmas at my workplace. The idea came when I found this wonderful devotional written by Ann Voskamp from Holy Experience: “The Glorious Coming“. I plan to buy a little Christmas tree for my cubicle and add the little ornaments on a daily basis. Maybe God can use it for me to witness. Tell others that Christmas is not about the new car in the driveway, or the new digital camera, or the latest gaming devise…

Will you join me? Will you share with others the coming of our Lord this advent season?

“And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. ~ Luke 2:10-11 (ESV)

His Prints

Faith Shape

This week we are finally talking about God – about His prints in our life. Heather asked us to share some “God Moments”. One thing I had mentioned to Heather is that God changes my attitude every single morning. Some mornings I really don’t feel ready to encounter the world, but He helps me through the day by changing my perspective on things. He shows me the world through His eyes. This said, I want to share with you a particular incident. When He guided my fingers over the keyboard in an almost hopeless situation…

I have worked with many accounting programs in many settings over the years. When I worked for the church, our old office was ‘open’ to all people, especially on Sunday mornings. My computer was used by the counting team in order to record Sunday’s offerings. My computer had a partition that was only accessible through a specific password and even the accounting software had its own password. Since that computer was used by many on Sundays (and believe me, not only for church business I later found out), the password protection was necessary.

One Monday morning, I wanted to access the accounting program and it wouldn’t let me in. I remembered that I had changed the password just the Friday before, but didn’t write it down (no use writing down a password – right?!?). I tried all my usual passwords, but none of them would let me into the program. I started to panic, because it was close to month-end — I had to get the numbers together for the mission directors. I kept trying, but with no success. So before I totally went crazy, I closed my eyes and prayed: “God, I really need to get into this program. I don’t want people to get mad at me. Please – I trust you. Guide my fingers – In Jesus’ name – Amen”. I kept my eyes closed, my fingers on the keyboard in position to type. I typed, hit the enter key. I was afraid to open my eyes, so I only open one – squinting at the screen. Can you guess. Yes – there were my spread sheets right in front of me. All I could say, between sobs, “Thank You”…

To this day, I have no clue that the password was (I changed the password after I got in ) — but He knew it. What I have learned from trusting Him with my little stuff is that I can even more so trust Him with my big stuff! He will guide me (or my hands) through this life until I see Him face to face…

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” ~ Deuteronomy 31:6 (NIV)
