“Until you settle the issue of your own worth, it’s impossible to bring holiness into anyone else’s life. Until you understand that your worth is already determined by the fact of your birth, everything else is an exercise in propping up a dying tree.”
~ Carol Brazo

Once in a while I struggle writing about my thoughts on a IOW quote, so it takes me a little longer. I have been contemplating about the above quote since Sunday–nothing came to mind, except Peter’s passage:

“But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.” ~ 1 Peter 2:9-10 (ESV)

It is a dog-eat-dog-world—especially in the corporate world. Sometimes it does not sit well with me. I try to be as friendly as I can be; trying to let Christ shine through me. The problem is that you rarely get a friendly word back. Which than in turn makes me feel like a doormat, lowering my self-worth/self esteem.

When situations arise where I feel really low, because someone had a very unkind (most cases unwarranted) word with me, I remember to Whom I belong. I am the daughter of a King that does not rule this world, but Who matters to me. I could pay back evil with evil, but I don’t think that would set well with my heavenly Father.

Will I bring holiness into someone else’s life with my actions/life? I pray I do and hope that they see something in me that may be desirable for them to have. My attempts might be like propping up a dying tree, but I am determined to make life this side of heaven a little friendlier.

Lord of Heaven and Earth. Please help me to remember that I belong to You every single day. Lift my spirit when someone is unkind or plain out rude. Help me to hold my tongue and display Your Spirit in me. In the precious name of Jesus ~ Amen.

Blessings on your day and as always…

  1. This definitely hits the mark, Iris! I know how vicious the corporate world can be. Jason is in a university environment and it is the same way with his colleagues. It can beat you down if you’re not ever aware of your worth in Christ. Thanks for posting! Have a wonderful week!

  2. Great points Iris. It is hard to be Christlike in certain environments – and it can wear you down. You made an excellent point. Thank you for your wisdom, as always.

  6. I love the post, especially the title. I thought about this week’s iow but I just couldn’t find the words to write on the topic. You summed it up perfectly!
    God bless.

  7. I understand what you mean Iris – even though I am not in the work place. It is hard to respond in love when others treat you unkindly. I just know you are light and salt and love wherever you are. I took part in Woman to Woman this week which is doing a very similar theme – Celebrating Me – telling about our strengths as women. It all comes down to who we are in Him.

  8. beautiful iris! knowing and remembering who and whose we are makes all the difference in a day, heh? shalom and love,

  11. I Pet 2:9-10 is a perfect verse to back up that quote. We are so blessed by Him! I’m also reminded that we are not to grow weary in our well-doing… in the corporate world, with our non-Christian friends, in our families. YOU are a blessing and an encouragement. Thank you.

Loved the photo of you and your husband above… still going strong after all these years. Hugs!

  12. Yes our worth must be totally rooted in Christ, in this world it is so easy to feel let down or belittled. But our God is great and He made us with love and tenderness and even died so that we might be saved. What a God! Wonderful post Iris, thanks. Hugs
