“If I’d abandon all that seeks to make my faith informed and chic, could You, would You, show Yourself to me?”
~ Nichole Nordeman ~

Several years ago I took 4 theological courses from our denomination’s main University system –Concordia. I loved the classes—especially Old and New Testament. I was exposed to things I have never seen before. I was introduced how to use Bible study tools effectively, which in turn was great when I lead women Bible studies. I was taught using more than just one translation of the Bible.

I would never call myself a theologian, but I love to discuss theology. Another thing I have learned through these classes is to have a ‘good’ discussion—like I have once in a while with Laurel or Carol…These ‘discussions’ help me to see Scripture from a different view point—from theirs. It helps me to grow; to grow to love the entire body of Christ…

I do not like discussions that hurt people. I have seen so many people get into discussions and get right down nasty—even within my own denomination. I don’t like it when people refer to traditions rather than to the Bible. A great discussion about theology/belief should ALWAYS involve Scripture; not a doctrinal book that was written from our church bodies…

As I was reading Acts today, guess what the people did when Paul and Silas were preaching in Berea? Yup – they ‘searched Scripture’…listen to this:

“And the people of Berea were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they listed eagerly to Paul’s message. They searched the Scriptures day after day to see if Paul and Silas were teaching the truth. As a result, many Jews believed, as did many of the prominent Greek women and men.” ~ Acts 17:11-12 (NLT – emphasis mine)

Although I really enjoyed my theological classes, they are only the icing on the cake. They were not necessary for my salvation. Salvation was accomplished by Jesus. To receive His mercy and grace, I only needed to believe…Through the power of the Holy Spirit I believe that the Cross is enough…enough for me to understand Scripture, to love the body of Christ…Christ searched for me, even before I was informed and chic…

I might be way off on my interpretation on this week’s quote, but the above is what came to my mind…If you would like to read other thoughts of Godly women for this week’s IOW quote, please visit my friend, Christine at Fruit in Season…

Blessings on your day and as always…

  1. Some nice thoughts here… I completely agree with your statement: “I don’t like it when people refer to traditions rather than to the Bible. A great discussion about theology/belief should ALWAYS involve Scripture; not a doctrinal book that was written from our church bodies…”

It’s so unfortunate that many theologians go to the Scriptures, but can’t agree amongst themselves on what it truly says. They search the Scriptures and arrive entirely opposite positions! Examples: The Reformed (Calvinistic) view vs. the Arminian view. Another big one is Cessationism: is tongues for today or not?)

I trust the Holy Spirit is leading and guiding me into all truth. (John 16:13) When I run into others who are at a different place of understanding, I try not to fret. I try to allow the Spirit the freedom to move in their lives, even as He continues to move me forward into His truth in mine. Mindful that the enemy uses dreadful lies to undermine the saved and unsaved alike, I search the Scriptures until I am completely settled on an issue. Then, when opportunities arise, I then I try to speak the truth in love, as He leads.

Truth is important. But love trumps all, for it “covers a multitude of sins.” Blessings to you this evening!

  2. I so agree Iris! I loved my theology classes, and can debate with the best of them, but it really doesn’t mean much except I can use big words. Grounding in Scripture and in love is what is so much more important when we share with others. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

  3. Great post. You are right that even though there are many views on different theological topics (and most of them based on Scripture) we do need to be really respectful when we have discussions. It is very ugly when Christians do not discuss in a respectful way.

This week more than ever, I am surprised at the different posts all coming from one quote!

  4. You’re so right, Iris! I loved this post. I sometimes enjoy the theological debates, and some of that has helped refine my thinking. I have found that on most issues, whichever “side” you’re on, you’re in good company! Smarter folks than me have debated theology for centuries! Sometimes I just withdraw and go to the foot of the cross and then the empty tomb, where none of the other issues matter. It’s about Jesus. It’s about a relationship. Praise His name, it’s about grace.

Wonderful post today! Thank you so much!

  5. The thing I’ve learned from my classes is that you can be studying ABOUT God everyday and still not be near Him. Remaining deeply rooted in relationship during those intense seasons of study was very intentional for me. Great post Iris!

  6. I loved your post! You are right on. I also love to “talk” theology and take classes on it (though I haven’t in a while). But that’s not the heart of God, especially not the doctrinal issues specific to each denomination. The heart of God is knowing Him and His Word; knowing the other stuff is helpful but not necessary. Hope you have a wonderful day!

  7. ” I only needed to believe…Through the power of the Holy Spirit” Amen, coud not have said it better. I am loving my theology class, I am soaking up like a sponge. But it is not necessary in my walk with Christ.

    Blessings!!

  8. Oh you are so right…the theology is just the icing on the cake. “You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free” John 8:32

    Blessings!!!!

  9. Although I really enjoyed my theological classes, they are only the icing on the cake. They were not necessary for my salvation.

yes that’s totally true! I love to study the bible and find new things but my relationship with God is where it stems from.

  10. Hi Iris-

I think you were right on with this take on the quote. I also love to get into those deep discussions. What an important point you made that we need to remember to focus on the Scriptures when engaging in those debates!

See you tomorrow for Wordless Wednesday!

  11. I loved your post, and you know what? I really don’t think there are wrong interpretations of these quotes. I think you should write about whatever impressed you, or what you came away with from the quote. And everyone’s angle on the quote ends up enriching all of us!

  12. Good post, Iris. I love discussing theology, too, but it would matter little without the saving grace of Jesus Christ. All to Him, I owe.

You’re a sweetheart among the sisters in the blogosphere. God is glorified in your servant’s heart. So glad to call you friend.

    hugs,
    Vicki
