~ Shannon Woodward ~
I remember after we got married how much I yearned to have a child; actually I wanted many :).
It took us two years to conceive. I had the perfect pregnancy. I wasn’t sick at all (just lost a little weight through the first 3 months) and I ate sensible. On June 11th, 1985, I gave birth to a perfect little bundle of joy. I was afraid leaving the hospital, because I didn’t know if I could handle the responsibility to raise a child…But I had help. My hubby was the greatest. He gave our son baths, changed diapers, helped as much as he could…and his favorite part, reading Dr. Seuss to Daniel. We had great years, we had challenging years (I just say teens ~ had major help there from the Lord)…But all-in-all is was a great joy to raise a child.
Yeah, we only had one chance to pass on our ‘legacy’. Daniel has great features from the both of us, but also some traits that ~ well lets just say that are not so good. Did we do everything right raising our son? To be honest, I don’t know and only time will tell. The most important part though is that our son knows the Lord…
Thinking about the quote all day, it hit me at lunch time. Do we only reproduce through our own flesh & blood? Not really. We can also share our values and beliefs with people who are not related to us. Isn’t that what the Lord called us to do? Share the Good News will the entire world; who ever wants to listen to us. We can plant seeds all over the world, especially through our Blogs :). God can make it grow…So, even if you don’t have children on your own, you can pass on your belief with sharing the Good News…
“And he said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. Go your way; behold, I am sending you out as lambs in the midst of wolves.” ~ Luke 10:2-3 (RSV)
Absolutely! A wonderful post. I believe God is “siring” spiritual offspring through us. The Word is seed and the more we sow it, the more fruit for the kingdom there will be! My son is about the same age as yours is, and he too is sowing the seed of God’s Word in the world. (I’m sure yours is too.) Now that’s a legacy!
Has not the LORD made them one? In flesh and spirit they are his. And why one? Because he was seeking godly offspring. So guard yourself in your spirit, and do not break faith with the wife of your youth. Malachi 2:15
You reminded me of this verse. God seeks Godly offspring.
That was very good, I enjoyed reading it.
Wonderful Iris. I so agree. We can raise them to the best of our abilities but it is up the Lord for the life they live. And there all we can really do is introduce them and show them through our own relationship. They have to be thirsty enough to drink!
Amen! Right now I’m not at the point of my life where I’m thinking about children, but I always want to think about my witness to those around me!
great post! It’s so true, that if we mirror the image of Christ that it leaves a ripple somewhere!
I have to believe thats what its all about, what do we pass on….really pass on…our values our beliefs and convictions…thats what we are called to do..Our children will leave us and what better proof of who we are than who they become…its a challenge, no doubt..thanks for making me think about that!!
I too believe it is important, but what to do when you come up against people who think you’re crazy for what you believe in?
I really loved this quote…especially the “replication of the heart”…it’s all a matter of perspective….God’s perspective. I always find such simple truths when I visit with you 🙂
I love this. Our legacy is more important than we realize. Thank you for sharing this thought. Be blessed. Love and hugs, Lynn
Beautifully said, Iris!!
To answer Jenn – the world definitely thinks we’re crazy. The gospel is offensive to unbelievers. So, we do what any sensible Christian should – we pray for them. And we remain firmly grounded in God’s word.
