Oh My…Bible Translations?

BibleI am really confused (it doesn’t take much to confuse me, believe me). This afternoon I ventured over to Ben’s Blog The Path Less Traveled to find out that the NIV translation is a ‘Not Inspired Version’ (Ben’s words – not mine). Here is what Ben said (please do read the entire post and the comment section – it is important to get the hole picture):

I will digress for a moment only to condemn the “story book” that is “loosely based on the Bible” that is known as the “Not Inspired Version” or the “NIV”. This is the absolute worst translation available and even goes so far as to remove the name of Jesus quite a number of times, making the understanding of the text ambiguous. Now, tell me, why would someone go the specific effort of removing the name of our Savior from the Bible?

Yikes, I never questioned the NIV translation (until 7 years ago, I used my German Luther Bible – which I still use on occasion), because it is used by our LC-MS church body. Well, I tell you, I will do some digging on the net this weekend regarding Bible translations. The KJV is a little heavy on my German brain…Ben mentioned an alternative, called The Evidence Bible, which seams to be a ‘lighter’ KJV.
So, what translation are you using? Comments would be appreciated…

Happy 488th Birthday

Luther SealAlthough most all of America is celebrating Halloween – I like to say: “Happy 488th Birthday!”
You might wonder what I am celebrating – well the Reformation of the Christian faith of course.
Today, on October 31st 1517, Martin Luther nailed his famous Ninety-Five Theses onto the door of the Wittenberg Church. So celebrate with me…

Religious or Spiritual?

Well, I finally found my answer…
Several months ago, someone said that I am too religious to know what fun is…Get this; this person doesn’t even know me.
But what really got me is that I don’t see myself as a ‘religious person’. Yes, I am a Christian and belief that Jesus died for my sins – but religious, I don’t think so! Actually that assumption made me very upset…I kept wondering why in the world I was so upset about that word (don’t even want to talk about the fun part). Today I finally figured it out (not on my own mind you, but via a devotional). Being religious is very close connected to “works-righteouness”.
I really loved this devotional and here is what John Fischer from the ‘Purpose Driven Life’ ministry had to say about it:

Religion is a system; spirituality is a state of being, made possible by a relationship. Religion is trying to please God; spirituality is enjoying God. Religion is Martha fussing in the kitchen; spirituality is Mary listening at the feet of Jesus. Religion keeps the score; spirituality keeps the faith.

I just love that…Read the entire devotion ‘More about Religion and Spirituality’; John Fischer hit the nail right on the head.
So, are you religious or spiritual? Do you think that there is a difference?
I, for myself, have to say yes…So, from now on, if someone calls me ‘religious’, I know what to say…
