BooksThis past Friday our son gave me his old e-reader (Sony Pocket Edition). I was really excited about it. I thought I could save a couple of trees…oh, how wrong I was!

You see, the Sony Pocket Edition does not sync with any of the downloads you can buy at Amazon or Barnes & Nobles (Digital Rights Management). On Saturday I spent several hours trying to figure it out, but the book I bought at one of the stores will not move over to my e-reader…I was so frustrated. I told my husband: “I am an old-fashioned gal – I am sticking with my books *sigh*…

What really frustrated me is that not everyone can afford (or does not want to 😉 ) all these new nifty “toys” like a BlackBerry, iPad, iPhone, Android, Kindle or Nook. Why can’t the online bookstores get together to have all e-books work on all e-reader, no matter what the make or model?

I did find an online bookstore that supports the (epub) format of my e-reader. Their Christian book selection is not that big yet (not the authors I am looking for). I hope that over time some of the publishing houses will stock the virtual shelves at “Kobo”.

So, if you are looking for an e-reader (because they are not cheap), make sure that you find out first where you can buy e-books for it. I am still thankful though that our son gave me the e-reader. As for the book I downloaded and cannot transfer to my e-reader? I guess I have to read Steven James’ “The Pawn” on my laptop …

Thanks for stopping in today. Have a blessed week…

  1. Hi Iris! I have a Nook…and I l-o-v-e it!! It hooks up with Barnes and Noble Book store, so basically any book of any genre can be downloaded to it. And, the books are at quite a discount from the paper versions. Don’t get me wrong, I still love a paper book (especially for the Bible), but I have truly been enjoying my Nook! I keep it in a leather folder made for it, so while I read it it feels like a book to me (do you know what I mean?) I can even connect to the internet (wifi) and read my favorite blogs on it! =) Or, if I choose, I can also read my purchased books on my computer. My sister has a Kindle, and she really enjoys that, too. She gets her books from Amazon for the Kindle. (Shhh..don’t tell her, but I like the Nook better).

Anyway, welcome to the wild-wonderful world of the e-reader!

  2. Iris,

I can SO relate. While I do enjoy some of the techy things I still LOVE MY BOOKS. I too am an old fashion girl! I would dare say in many ways I am. We are at a church now where our Pastor calls to pray with you or sends a letter of care to you when you’re ailing and it’s not a small church. I have said to my hubby, “now that’s old school and I love it!!!!” I don’t take it for granted.

One of my hubby’s dr’s called him on a sat night with results a few months ago and again I said, “that’s old school and I love it!!”.

Give me back a few of the old school things any day and one is keeping my BOOKS!!!

    Love ya!

  3. Precious Iris… I can’t even input new numbers into my cell phone. I’m afraid I’d be lost with anything more than a bound book in my hands. I think, perhaps, I rather like it that way.

Mercy, I use to tease my folks about “keeping” with the times; now, I’m one of them.

PS: And thanks for your prayers for Amelia. We felt them everyone.

  4. I don’t know if I would get used to reading a book on an electronic device. I like to hold the book and turn the pages! Who knows, I might try it someday, I never thought I’d like audio books either but like those now!

    Have a good week, friend!

  5. Oh that is too bad Iris. I was given a Kindle when they first came out as a gift and I love it. I still like many books to hold in my hands but I love that I can stick it in my purse and if I ever have to wait, I have a variety of books to chose from depending on my mood. It’s also great for traveling. I used to pack many books but now I don’t have to do that. The Kindle works great with Amazon.

Can you return it and get a Kindle instead? I know they are all expensive though. I am glad I didn’t have to pay for mine.

    Love you,
    Debbie
