“Give us this day our daily bread…”
(Matthew 6:11 ESV)
Sometimes I forget how truly blessed I am and that I should take nothing for granted. Not my health, and my wealth. I am reminded every time I drive past “Paz De Cristo“, an organization that supplies food and water to the homeless people in my part of town.
You see, even though I am not wealthy by worldly standards, I am richer than most people. I can provide food for my family and even for friends. It may not be much that I bring to the table, but we have never experienced hunger. I cannot even imagine how that feels.
This past Sunday, the banner over the altar hit me right between the eyes. Even though the banner has been hanging over the altar for some time, I never really paid attention to the Bible verse, it says:
“And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’ (Matthew 25:40 ESV ~ emphasis mine)
On Sunday, I wasn’t sure why the verse hit me hard; I have read it, heard it a million times…But as I was driving once again past “Paz De Cristo” I knew why. I do have my daily bread, and I take it for granted. I need to pay more attention to the people around me, especially to the hungry children that line up at the homeless shelter.
Lord of Heaven and Earth. Thank you for opening my eyes. Help me to be more mindful of the people that do not have their daily bread. Help me to see the need in my community. Help me to be Your hands and feet, that bring not only the physical but also the spiritual bread. In the precious name of Jesus. Amen.
