A Journey

“May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.” ~ Romans 15:5-7 (ESV)

Cross in CourtyardSince moving to the United States in 1991, God has put me on a journey. Although growing up in the ‘church’, I have not understood grace the way I understand it today. As I had shared last Thursday, God’s grace is confrontational to most people. Do I understand the full scope of grace yet? Not at all, but I have opened up the gift and received HIS grace.

I do not remember the year when I had the first encounter with women from other denominations, but I do remember it was at a Beth Moore conference here in Phoenix. One of my friends from church invited me. I didn’t know what to expect, but after the conference I took Beth’s online study “Believing God“. It believe that this was a turning point for me.

Since then God has been working with me on breaking down walls. Not only between other Christians, but also my thought process of other faiths. In 2006, God started to assemble a group of women from across the States and the Bahamas to form Laced with Grace. You have no idea how much this ministry has meant to me (again, breaking down walls). The group consists of 20 women; from different denominations, and different walks of life. Amazing what you can learn from each individual if you are willing to listen.

I think (personal opinion) that we too often get stuck with traditions in our churches that we do not see that Christ died for all. Christ was not Lutheran, Baptist, Methodist, Catholic, Assembly of God, or _________ (insert your denomination); He is our Savior.

Over the past 6 months I have prayed for God to show me how to reach out to people ‘outside’ the Christian faith. His answer came through a quote I read in Joanne Weaver’s book “Having a Mary Heart…“:

“If Christians lived according to their faith, there would be no more Hindus left in India” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

When I read the quote for the first time, my heart sank and I said “ouch”. But after thinking about what was said, I have to agree. Goodness, there is a branch within my own denomination what will not pray with ‘my’ branch, because we disagree on something (sorry don’t remember what it is; struck it from my memory because I think it is silly). What does this have to do with Gandhi’s quote you might wonder. Everything. Because if we cannot live in harmony with each other (Christians), how can we be affective with our witness about Christ and His sacrifice?

Thank you for stopping by today. I hope that you will join me next week when I share more about my current journey.

September 2010 ~ Giveaway #1

***Comments closed – winner will be announced tomorrow, September 13th***

As many of you may know, September is my birthday month. Hitting the BIG 50 this year is something. Strange thing, I am more okay turning 50 than I was turning 40.

At any rate, to kick off my big celebration, I thought I have a weekly giveaway until my birthday. The first week I would like to give one of my readers a book that I have been reading over the last couple of weeks that really dug deep down into my heart. Later this week I will share a little more about a theme God has been impressing on my heart through this book and other means. The book I am talking about is Joanna Weaver’s book “Having a Mary Heart…

Lori was surprised that I am just now reading the book (it has been on my wish list for 3 years – yikes). I truly wish I had more time to read, but my work-schedule and my photography do not leave room for much else.

There are many books out there that tell us how to keep focused on God in our busy lives; Joanna’s book is different. Joanna shares her own struggle keeping up with life’s demands. Her honesty encouraged me to say the least; I am not alone in the struggle finding time to meet with God. Don’t get me wrong, I get up early to get my ‘fuel’ for the day. To be honest though, some mornings I rather snooze 30 minutes longer…

What do you have to do to win the book? Simply leave a comment below (US, Canada, and APO Addresses only please). If you already have the book, please still enter for a friend/family member as a gift. I think that all women can benefit from this book no matter how long you are a follower of Christ. This week’s giveaway ends on Sunday, September 12th.

Call Me Old Fashioned

BooksThis past Friday our son gave me his old e-reader (Sony Pocket Edition). I was really excited about it. I thought I could save a couple of trees…oh, how wrong I was!

You see, the Sony Pocket Edition does not sync with any of the downloads you can buy at Amazon or Barnes & Nobles (Digital Rights Management). On Saturday I spent several hours trying to figure it out, but the book I bought at one of the stores will not move over to my e-reader…I was so frustrated. I told my husband: “I am an old-fashioned gal – I am sticking with my books *sigh*…

What really frustrated me is that not everyone can afford (or does not want to 😉 ) all these new nifty “toys” like a BlackBerry, iPad, iPhone, Android, Kindle or Nook. Why can’t the online bookstores get together to have all e-books work on all e-reader, no matter what the make or model?

I did find an online bookstore that supports the (epub) format of my e-reader. Their Christian book selection is not that big yet (not the authors I am looking for). I hope that over time some of the publishing houses will stock the virtual shelves at “Kobo”.

So, if you are looking for an e-reader (because they are not cheap), make sure that you find out first where you can buy e-books for it. I am still thankful though that our son gave me the e-reader. As for the book I downloaded and cannot transfer to my e-reader? I guess I have to read Steven James’ “The Pawn” on my laptop …

Thanks for stopping in today. Have a blessed week…

Thankful Thursday ~ “Scripture Dig”

“But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. “And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.” ~ Matthew 6:6-8 (ESV)

God always sends someone or something into our lives when we struggle with certain parts of our spiritual life. It was no different when it came to my prayer life. As I had mentioned in my IOWT post, I am struggling with prayer. I have prayed some prayers for years that have not been answered; which keeps me wondering if I do not pray hard enough…

…last week I came across a blog that I know will help me in my struggles concerning my spiritual life. Guess what subject the Scripture Dig team is covering right now?!? Yup, prayer. Kathy Howard is currently writing a series on ‘The Lord’s Prayer’. Her writings are thought provoking and powerful. But don’t take my word for it; check it our yourself (just click on the image to take you there)…

So, this week I am thankful for God’s provision for my walk with Him. I am thankful that He sent help growing closer to Him and His will.

What are you thankful for this week? Please share with us over that my friend Laurie’s blog “Women Taking a Stand“, linking up with your own Thankful Thursday post.

Thank you for stopping by today. Remember: God will always find a way to help you grow.
