Who ever Said…

…that you can’t jazz up old hymns has not heard the “Redemption Songs” album by the group “Jars of Clay“. When you grew up like me with Rock – you will appreciate this project. The melody lines and the lyrics are from old, favorite hymns, like “Nothing but the Blood”, “I’ll Fly Away” or the song you can hear here, “I Need Thee Every Hour”, but oh, the arrangements rock!!!! Although I bought this CD for only the one song I truly love (“I’ll Fly Away”), I love the entire album. I give it 5 stars :razz:…

  1. When I first started dating my Hubby his oldest daughter listened to Jars of Clay all the time. I fell in love with their music and keep lots of it on mu IPOD. I love new spins on old hymns, especially when the kids walk around singing them!

  2. The Christian music groups : Jars of Clay and Delirious? are the music of choice in our house for my husband and somewhat for my young son. It’s mostly for my husband who like you appreciates the Christian rock music, after growing up with secular rock bands. If you are really interested I can get a website of theirs for you. I like some of the songs from these groups, but my choice of music varies considerably from my husband’s. He is pure rock. 🙂

  3. Tell us what you REALLY think Iris ;).

    How did you embed this song in your post? Nice way to hear it without all the ad garbage of links to links I’ve included before.

    JOC is a great band……I’m not a fan of typical, traditional hymns (outside the beautiful lyrics…), so when I hear remixes I’m thankful for the new life breathed into them.

  4. That is one of my all time favorite CD’s as well Iris! I’m a JOC fan from their beginning. (you woulld love their first CD too)

    I hope you and your husband are comforted this week by those songs.

    {{hugs}}

  5. LOVE it! I will have to buy this one when I get a chance. There is nothing else quite like the words of those “older” songs! Thanks for sharing! I am praying for you and your husband this week, that God will give you comfort and peace. Blessings to you!

  6. Oh Iris, thank you so much for sharing this. I am so out of the music loop–our area Christian station only has Christian music on the weekends and half the time I forget. I love Jars of Clay and am only learning many of the old hymns. I am thrilled to be able to say that our church does jazzed up old hymns mixed with new praise music. Yesterday Paul (our music minister) did an awesome version of Nothing but the Blood. I will definitely be looking into this–I had been praying for some new peraise music as I am noticing that the kids are responding much better to inging along if they have heard the songs at home.

  7. yep Jars of Clay are one of my favourites too, I didn’t grow up in a Christian home but am raising my own children to hear redemption songs though…

  8. Everywhere I turn today, people are playing my favorite songs! I love love love this album and this group! We jazz up our hymns at our church (my husband and I lead worship) and boy I am here to attest to the fact that you can indeed bring a beat to a hymn!

    Ill be singing this all day now!

  9. Hey I got this one for Christmas and I love it 🙂
    There is a similar one from Amy Grant “LEGACY – Hymns & Faith” which I also like very much!

  10. oh, I love that album. I actually am grooving to it every morning as I am getting ready for the day. Something about that first song just gets you moving in a mellow, groovy sort of way.

    blessings,

  11. You rock! Love this. My kids have listened to Jars of Clay for years… meanwhile I’ve been listening to Smooth Jazz. They’re shocked and tickled when Mom listens to “their” music. It’s really growing on me… :~)
